53 Juniors ยท 20+ AdultsEVOLVE Badminton Club was established in 2021 with a clear mission: to increase badminton participation among local junior players and build structured community sport pathways within the Geelong region.
What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a rapidly expanding community organisation, now delivering structured junior, adult, and senior programs in response to strong and sustained local demand.
Based across Belmont and Highton in Geelong, we offer a coaching environment that is genuinely rare in regional Australia โ elite international experience combined with warm, inclusive community values. Every player who walks through our doors is supported to grow, compete, and belong.
Our internal competition nights regularly attract up to 35 participants, and we maintain an approximately equal participation ratio between boys and girls โ a reflection of the inclusive, welcoming environment we've worked hard to build.
Led by former Australian No. 1 and World No. 35 Darren McDonald and supported by international Commonwealth Games medallists.
Established in 2021 and already serving 73+ active participants across junior, adult and senior programs with strong competition outcomes.
Programs for women and girls, migrants, EAL participants, ASD children, and players of all abilities โ everyone is welcome at EVOLVE.
Currently operating at Belmont High School and Montpellier Primary School, seeking permanent facility access to meet surging demand.
EVOLVE Badminton Club was built on the belief that every young person in regional Australia deserves access to high-quality sport โ regardless of background, ability, or starting point.
We provide clear, progressive pathways from first-touch beginner programs through to regional and national competition. Every step is planned, coached, and supported.
Aligned with Australian Sports Commission principles, we actively support women and girls, migrants, EAL participants, ASD children, and anyone who needs additional support to participate in sport.
We believe regional players can achieve at the highest levels. Our coaching structure delivers measurable performance outcomes โ as our growing tournament medal tally demonstrates.
Darren McDonald's journey from Geelong to Australian No. 1 to World No. 35 is proof that regional athletes can compete on the world stage. We use that story to inspire every junior we coach.
Full alignment with Badminton Australia and Australian Sports Commission safe sport frameworks. Child safety, positive coaching, and respectful environments are non-negotiable at EVOLVE.
Sport is a bridge. We use badminton to build social connections, community belonging, resilience, and lifelong healthy habits across Geelong's diverse and growing population.

A coaching team that combines elite international achievement with decades of grassroots development experience โ rare at any level, extraordinary for a regional club.
One of Australia's most accomplished badminton players of his era, Darren brings unrivalled elite experience to every training session. His own story โ from Geelong to the world stage โ inspires every junior he coaches.
Current President of Badminton Australia and former international representative, Julie provides elite-level technical insight, competition mentoring, and strategic coaching support.
Jane plays a key role in the club's junior development structure, overseeing technical foundations, beginner-to-intermediate progression, and structured junior training delivery.
More than two decades of badminton coaching experience across junior and adult environments. Michelle delivers long-term athlete development, group coaching, and social participation support.
Started badminton at age 8 and progressed through the club's own development pathways. Kiara now supports junior beginner programs, skill reinforcement, and entry-level participation โ a testament to the club's coach development pipeline.
Recent results at the Beyond Bank Junior Classics โ Geelong and Ballarat โ demonstrate the quality of our coaching and the rapid development of our athletes, just three years after the club's founding.
Our daughters โ Azure, Alva and Abby โ have been part of EVOLVE for more than three years. When they first joined, they had little experience. With the patient guidance of Darren, Jane, Kiara and Michelle, they have grown from beginners into confident players now participating in tournaments. The club is not only focused on skills, but on building confidence, resilience and a positive mindset in every child.
I started learning badminton after my family moved to Geelong. Last year, I lost all of my games at the Geelong tournament โ it was very difficult. But with Darren's guidance and patience, I kept training and slowly became more confident. This year, in the same tournament, I achieved one gold medal and two silver medals. Something I never thought possible. The club has helped me grow not only as a player, but as a more resilient person.
My boys have had a wonderful experience at EVOLVE. The coaches are patient, supportive, and passionate. The training sessions are well organised and the club has created a positive, encouraging environment. Since joining, they have developed their badminton abilities and also learned teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. I highly recommend EVOLVE to any family looking for a welcoming, high-quality badminton community.
I started learning badminton at EVOLVE when I was 7 years old. I really enjoy the training and the competition nights. The coaches are kind, patient, and always encourage me to try my best. I have made many friends at the club and my badminton skills have improved a lot.
